We hiked the Gorge de Caranca today!  It started out rainy – hard downpours during our morning (really early afternoon since we went to bed late & slept for 13 hours.)  We’re glad we stuck it out and went on the long hike instead of the short one as it eventually cleared up.  We could [...]

C turned 26 today and didn’t even realize until he wrote the date in his journal yesterday that it was his last day as a 25-year-old!  We had a great day even though we didn’t do anything special – other than spend the day enjoying the French Pyrenees!  I told him we might be able [...]

I had a great snack yesterday: cous-cous with apricots, almonds and raisins, with a sweetener, possibly apricot juice?  I’ll have to try to reproduce that.
The French like some foods cold that Americans don’t usually eat cold: cold cous-cous, sautéed vegetables, coffee, and even cold crème brulee!  They also like creamy, heavy sauces and cheeses.  I [...]

We hiked a great trail today up and over to Z’mutt.  The sun kept coming out and hiding again, so I was hot and cold over and over again.  The forceful wind blew rain/snow into our faces since we were walking straight into it.  Despite that and possibly a bit of wind burn and/or altitude [...]

We’re here in the season between seasons.  The shoulder season is half of April and all of May.  Summer goes from June through September.  It’s apparent on our hike today that winter is ending quickly.  We witnessed icicles melting, hiked down a ski slope and road with sloppy mud and patches of slushy snow, and [...]

We had a relaxing day that began with sitting in the sun and ended with sitting in the shade as the sun dove beyond sight.  In between we meandered from our B&B to the village of Torri, then to Stigliano.  Great views abound except for the factory that we walked by on our way from [...]

The Tuscan landscape is like the ideal countryside to me.  It has attractive farms, alternating olive groves and vineyards, on gently inclining hillsides.  There is a significant amount of forested areas between farms.  They have beautiful forests, a mixture of evergreens and deciduous, many wildflowers, and the strange thin cypresses scattered around.  The climate is [...]

Today we planned on going for another hike on the north side of town, but we had no real plans. We headed out on Via Dante towards Strada at 1130, looking at the massive roses on the side of the busy road. The loop we were following fortunately took a right off the main road [...]

I keep smelling rank sewer fumes as we walk along.  It’s like there are little pockets of the stench in these very old towns with mostly very old plumbing.  I noticed that kind of things in big Spanish cities (also very old.)  I don’t know if I’m smelling a bunch of sewer leaks or hidden [...]
