We’re at the cafe at the Lesce-Bled train station at 8:00 in the morning. On our bus ride from Bohinj, we saw a guy pull up on the edge of an intersection. He left his car caddy-cornered with the door wide open in the street as he looked at a periodical stand. His Audi station [...]

Sweden pictures
I only wrote two long entries in or about Stockholm. I’m dividing the entries somewhat arbitrarily into individual entries for each day we were in Stockholm.
We’ve been in Stockholm the last few days. If Slovenia was the land of plenty, Sweden is the land of beautiful people. Stockholm is definitely a typical European [...]

The architecture is different – particularly residential. I couldn’t quite put my finger on it at first, but we figured out that the buildings are simpler with fewer balconies. There aren’t many balconies on older places (turn of the century), but more on the newer ones (50s/60s on.) The windows are much larger in Sweden [...]

Swedes are obsessed with punctuality and have their own etiquette rules. When our flight was late, the Swedes were very upset! They are very polite, careful not to intrude or barge in. When our friend’s landlord stopped by, she didn’t set foot in the apartment but just chatted outside for a couple minutes.
We visited an [...]

The Swedes aren’t are environmentally-friendly as I thought they were from what I noticed as a traveler. In their big box store (grocery and everything else), I could only find one natural cleaner. They don’t have nearly as much organic selection in any product as the Swiss have. The French and Italians paled in comparison [...]

I really appreciate now that in the US you can get almost whatever you want from either a store or online and have it shipped right to your door. And store hours are long. Most of all, we have reliable essential services like health care. There is no slack in hospital emergency room care due [...]

It’s interesting to have some insight as to what kind of a society results in a welfare state. Swedes apparently don’t like to stand out – they want to be equal with everyone else. I read in the book Eat, Pray, Love that the best one-word description for the city of Stockholm is “conformity.” [...]
